Designing and Its Importance

A design for a document, website or even blog is all created to guide readers through the text by directing attention to individual topics (Reep D, 2006).

I have chosen my classmates Aaron Tan's presentation slides to critique. Page balance is the weight of colour, text and design all in balance with each other. In this case, the presentation slide provided by my classmate lacks of Page balance whereby the colour contrast of black overwhelms other colours. "Formal balance on a page would be the same as two evenly filled scales hanging at the same level" (Reep D, 2006). With that being said, it proves my statement that the colour of black in this presentation slide seems to overwhelm neutral and positive colours. As Diana Reep (2006) also writes that dark colours weigh more than light colours and there should be an equal amount of both present in a document to have page balance. Here is an example taken from his slides.

However, the sequencing in his slides are rather commendable as he is able to arrange his design in the proper manner. Readers tend to read or scan from left to right or up to down (Reep D, 2006) and readers also consider the weight of a subject to be on the top. This type of design leads them to the correct reading path. It also give a certain attraction to readers as readers are able to scan through and read through easily without the hassle of searching for the right content.

Another good point in the slides provided by my classmate is that it is consistent. Consistency refers to providing or presenting similar features in a similar style (Reep D, 2006). In this case, the slides are of very consistent as he uses the same size of headings as well as it is of the same style. Indentations means to keep items like paragraphs quotations and lists in a uniform pace (Reep D, 2006). Here he has kept the indentations in uniform order as well. All these helps readers to differentiate the importance of an issue with those not as important. It also gives a relief to readers that finding such information is so easy. The bullet points in the presentation slide help readers to initiate and know that this is a sub explanation of the main topic and the main topic usually is the header.

In conclusion, it is of utmost importance that we consider the use of the ways I have just stated as it creates a much more easier way of reading as well as it creates a more interesting document to read.

Media And Its New Found Glory

There are a few new forms of media publishing but these few are the most significant.

Twitter
One of them is twitter. Twitter was found in March 2006 by Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey, and Biz Stone (Work, Jerry. n.d). Twitter has grown into much popularity ever since it has been introduced. It just like an SMS but on the internet. It enables someone to post of the most recent progress of someones life. Tweeter is also known as a micro blog as there is only a certain number of words that can be posted up at one time. So there must be a system to ensure the number of words do not exceed.

Youtube
Youtube is one of the biggest phenomenon with millions of viewers going trough the website at the same time. Founded by Chad Hurley, Steven Chen and Jawed Karim in 2005 where they first registered Youtubet up videos. The fathers of Youtube managed to turn such a simple idea into a billion dollar company (Robert, 2007). Their first video was posted up on Youtube in April 23rd 2005. Now, Youtube has become a place for the media to post up their videos and such. News channels now have Youtube accounts where they are able to channel their news through the usage of Youtube and its ability to post videos as well as its well known popularity.

Facebook
Facebook is one of the largest social network on the net alongside Myspace (Yadav, S. 2007). Facebook launched their website in 2004 and now has become the talk of the town. It has become a place for applications to gather in as well as advertisements to flood in. Through the posting of advertisements, this is one way Facebook gets money. It was originally know as thefacebook which was founded by Mark Zuckerberg during his study in Harvard. He eventually dropped out of Harvard with a few of his friends to continue Facebook full time. Now, there are news channels that have their own facebook pages as well. The local media industry advertises this on the television as well as other media sources. This is a way media uses its new found partners to advertise its news and company.

A Close Knit Community

A blogging community as we know is an online group of people who connect with each other through the usage of the internet or blogs. But what we do not know is that these online bloggers do have regular meet ups to share their interests on blogs or just to have fun. A blogging community can be established just by going to other blogs and reading their posts on their blog (Nikki, n.d). This helps to establish a new found ability of knowing what you may be interested in and you may come across a blog that shares similar interests with your blog. This then helps connect two people into making a new community of shared interest.

Leaving a comment on others blogs also helps connect one another as they are able to talk about common interest and sharing their knowledge. It creates a connection between bloggers. Replying comments posted on your blog also helps in creating a community as well. It shows that you are interested in your readers comments and it creates an interest between reader and blogger.

There are currently many types of blogging communities. A local blog community is one called Lowyat.net. It is quite well known in Malaysia as it caters to the needs of people who are searching for a certain product, intend to sell a certain product or even trading. There are many others that cover not only basic products but more specific things like car parts, watches, cellphones and musical equipment.

All these blog communities help connect people through the internet by catering to the needs and wants of their readers and customers.

The many types of blogs

Personal Blog
There are many different categories of blogs but here I will be concentrating on just a few types of blogs. According to Rick Farrington, a majority of bloggers blogs are categorized under personal blogs. Writers in these kinds of blogs usually write about their personal life and things that relate to their personal lifestyle. Personal blogs are also used as a source of income as it depends on the amount of 'clicks' a blogger gets on their blog page. It depends on how many times internet readers click on their blog or an advertisement posted up in the blog. A personal blog also has a personal touch onto it. A blogger can personalize his or her blog with anything he or she chooses as it is their personal blog.

Cultural Blog

Another type of blog is a cultural blog which talks about musical interests, art and other types of culture. This attracts readers that have an interest on the same genre of music or art. This is where they can exchange their knowledge of other cultures or music. Again, it connects people far and wide and creates a 'global village' through the usage of the internet. People also write reviews of their favourite musical icon or favourite current song on the radio or on their list. Discussions of the meanings and underlining factors hidden in art or music are discussed here within the new community they have created.

Business Blog

A business blog is basically a blog that has a lot of relations to business studies as well as other topics related to business. This is also where companies promote their products and their business. The internet now has been an influencing factor in businesses especially with the new wave of massive usage of blogs. Companies has turned to blogs as a way to connect to business partners as well as their consumers.

A Blogging Community

Blogging in today's day and age has become a social norm as almost everyone has at least posted up one blog post in their blog. As statistics show that 15% of bloggers spend at least 10 hours each week blogging in their blog (Bradley, P. 2010). Another interesting fact shows that one third of bloggers are male (Bradley, P. 2010). Blogging nowadays is not only for personal views and voicing out opinions but also as a source of income. After John Barger started the term of web blog into society, it has caught on to people like wild fire and hundreds of thousands of people have started to blog ever since 1997 where John Barger started off the term which we now know as Blogs.

In terms of the blogging to the community, it is a way of reaching out to others who have the same interests as you do and redefining ways of communication and reading. Reading used to come from newspapers, web sites, magazines and books. Nowadays, they come from blogs. Blogs that have a special personal touch are considered more interesting. Words or stories that can't be expressed through speaking are always put into writing. It is especially beneficial to writers as they can now create their own stories without having to publish their own books. That way, the blogging community as well as internet users are able to connect by means of blogging and reading others blogs. This brings in the term "Global Village" by Marshall McLuhan (McLuhan M, 1964). A global village is that we as internet users are all connected to one another as though we are in a small village.

A community is formed when bloggers or internet users who do not have to know each other are commenting and chatting in the same blog. In that way, it creates a community of its own.

The Blogging Phenom

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_m1tT3H8A12g/SxchU9l7ZPI/AAAAAAAAAT4/NEHYjVKd1Fg/s400/blogging101.gif

Blogging has become a common thing among not only young adults and teenagers but leaders like Tun Dr. Mahathir and the elderly. More than 133 000 000 people have been accounted for by Technorati since 2002 (Bradley, P. 2010). The word blog actually came from the "Web log" and "was further promoted by pyra.com as a Blog at its www.blogger.com site" (Dvorak, J. 2002). So now we know web logs as Blogs and the people who blog are called Bloggers. There are many different sites for blogs like Blogspot, Wordpress and so on. All have the same purpose which are basically, to blog on but with a different style or theme. "Blogging goes beyond software posting" (Dvorak, J. 2002), it is more of a form of communication between other bloggers as well as it is a way to reach out to the public and voicing out your opinions.

My target audiences are basically teenagers who are curious and have questions on the blogging phenomenon. I hope by blogging about this phenomenon many other people are able to obtain the new knowledge about blogging just as I have.
